Amelia Vega, who captured the audience during the 2003 Miss Universe Competition, is a statuesque 18-year-old native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Her incredible energy and vivacious nature won over the judges during the live NBC telecast held in Panama City, Panama! Amelia's move from the Dominican Republic to take on the title of MISS UNIVERSE is a sweet reunion for her and New York City, where she once resided as a student in Queens. This time around, Amelia will work as a goodwill ambassador for women around the world by representing the Miss Universe Organization.

Miss Vega edged out first-runner up Miss Venezuela, Mariangel Ruiz to win the honor of Miss Universe 2003. Miss South Africa, Cindy Nell was the second runner up, followed by third runner up Miss Serbia and Montenegro, Sanja Papic, and fourth runner up, Miss Japan, Miyako Miyzaki.  Seventy one young women competed for the Miss Universe crown, which itself is valued at $250,000, as well as thousands of dollars' worth in cash and other prizes.

Amelia's mother, Patricia Polanco competed in 1980 for the Dominican Republic in the Miss Universe pageant as well.  I saw Amelia for the first time at K-Mart on a Covergirl ad.  I was impressed to say the least.
