With her smooth yet powerful voice, Jeni
Fujita moves her listener's souls with songs of love, pain, inspiration and the
magnitude of life. Jeni's background is in musical theatre. She ventured to New
York City from her native Sunnyvale, California in the mid 90's. She was fresh
out of high school and eager to become a recording artist. By coincidence and
fortune's luck, she connected with the Fugee Refugee Camp soon after moving to
New York.
The Fugees were riding the high of the multi platinum success of the album "The
Score" and many of the group's members were working on solo albums. With the
discovery of Fujita's clear, strong and distinctive voice, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn
Hill and John Forte all commissioned Jeni to sing on their albums. With the
different artists, Jeni performed numerous times on MTV, Saturday Night Live,
The Rosie O' Donnell Show, Regis and Kelly, Dick Clark's New Yearís Rockin Eve
and at Madison Square Garden. Additionally, she toured with Wyclef Jean and
Destiny's Child on their first tour. The climactic point of this time, though,
was the Grammy nomination for the song "Guantanamera" off the platinum selling
album "The Carnival". Jeni sang the hook on "Guantanamera". This hook put Jeni
Fujita on the map in the recording industry.
Since the days of singing with the Refugee Camp, Jeni has toured with Arista
recording artist Pink as lead backup vocalist promoting the now multi platinum
album "Missundazstood". Additionally, she is completing her own solo album.
The songs on the album range from pop to rock to funk to ballads. Each song has
special meaning to Jeni and was written to inspire her fans. With her musical
inspiration coming from artists such as Janis Joplin, Barbara Streisand and Tina
Marie, Jeni's music is honest, soulful and affecting. Her sound has been
compared to that of Fleetwood Mac and Nelly Furtado. She features acoustic
instrumentals in the majority of her songs and like the varied artists she has
been compared to, her repertoire is wide-ranging, yet her style is distinct. Her
voice flows effortlessly - from light and soft to strong, clear and simply
beautiful. She seems incapable of hitting an off note.
Jeni says:"Music is the universal connector. You don't have to understand the
words to be moved by a voice, a melody. When you are moved by the music and you
can also intimately connect and relate to the lyrics, you receive a gift. I
strive to give this gift with each one of my songs."
